چکیده

The development of haptic technology is allowing the introduction of Virtual Reality systems as teaching and working tools into many fields such as engineering (Howard & Vance, 2007; Savall et al., 2002) or surgery (Basdogan et al., 2004; Li & Liu, 2006). Haptic devices allow users to interact with a certain environment, either remote or virtual, through the sense of touch, considerably enhancing interactivity. A haptic device is a mechanism that allows users to control the movements of a virtual tool or a real robot and receive tactile and kinesthetic information from the working environment (Fig. 1). The usability of these systems is conditioned by the quality of the haptic feedback applied to the user. Technologically, the computation of appropriate and realistic haptic stimuli continues to be a complicated issue. The human sensory-motor system demands a fast update rate (at least 1 kHz) for the haptic stimuli applied to the user in order to avoid instabilities in

Real-time Adaptive Prediction Method for Smooth Haptic Rendering

In this paper, we propose a real-time adaptive prediction method to calculate smooth and accurate haptic feedback in complex scenarios. Smooth haptic feedback is an important task for haptic rendering with complex virtual objects. However, commonly the update rate of the haptic rendering may drop down during multi-point contact in complex scenarios because high computational cost is required fo...

6-DoF Haptic Rendering of Static Coulomb Friction Using Linear Programming

Simulating frictional contact between objects with complex geometry is important for 6-DoF haptic rendering applications. For example, friction determines whether components can be navigated past narrow clearances in virtual assembly. State-of-the-art haptic rendering of frictional contact either augments penalty contact with frictional penalty springs, which do not prevent sliding and cannot r...

Haptic Rendering for Under-Actuated 6/3-DOF Haptic Devices

Under-actuated 6/3-DOF haptic devices are mostly used for simple 3-DOF point-based haptic interaction because of missing torque feedback. In this work, we present a system involving sensory substitution and pseudo-haptic feedback that effectively simulate torque feedback using visuo-tactile cues. The proposed system was implemented into a 6DOF haptic rendering algorithm and tested on an under-a...

A GPU-friendly Method for Haptic and Graphic Rendering of Deformable Objects

In this paper we present a new method for real-time interactive haptic and graphic rendering of complex objects locally deformed by multiple contacts. Core algorithms have been designed to be executable also on videoboard’s GPU, thus taking advantage of parallel matrix and vector computational power. Although complex physical simulation has been simplified to run on GPUs, results are characteri...

Configurable Design of Multimodal Non Visual Interfaces for 3D VE's

3D virtual environments (VE) require an advanced user interface to fully express their information contents. New I/O devices enable the use of multiple sensorial channels (vision, hearing, touch, etc.) to increase the naturalness and the efficiency of complex interactions. Haptic and acoustic interfaces extend the effective experience of virtual reality to visually impaired users. For these use...
